About MapFable

What is MapFable?

MapFable is the easiest way to remember your tabletop RPG sessions — a Letterboxd for the table.

Log a session in a minute: the game, who played, what happened. Your players confirm they were there and add their own side of the story. Session by session, your campaigns turn into a history worth keeping — and a profile that shows who you are at the table: what you run, what you play, and the systems that define you.

Any system. Any table. In person or online.

We don't run your game or replace your prep — MapFable is the memory of your table, not the tools. Free to start, no password.

Events from the table
The party crossed into Barovia as the mists closed behind them, sealing the road home. In the crumbling chapel they found Gabbo already half-mad, muttering about a bargain he never should have made. He fell in the crypt below — whether he slipped or was pulled, no one could say. On the altar lay a silver key, still warm to the touch, humming faintly when Ireena came near. By dusk the village had bolted every door and shuttered every window. Something paced the treeline as the light failed, patient and unhurried. We made camp in the old windmill and took watches in pairs. No one slept much.

Questions

FAQ

The things GMs and players usually want to know before they start.

The basics

What is MapFable, in one line?

MapFable is your table's memory — the easiest way to remember your tabletop RPG sessions. After a game, you log what happened and who was there, and over time your campaigns become a chronicle you can look back on. Think “Letterboxd for the table.”

Is it a prep tool? Does it run my game?

No — and that's on purpose. MapFable doesn't run your session, build your world, or replace your prep. It works after the dice are down: it's the memory of what happened, not the tools you use to make it happen. If you love Obsidian, Foundry, or a notebook for prep, keep them — MapFable sits next to them, not on top of them.

What does it cost?

It's free to start, and there's no password — you sign in with a secure link sent to your email. You can log sessions, tag players, and build your history without paying anything.

Which games does it work with?

Any of them. Any system, any table, in person or online. You log the session whatever you played — D&D, Mothership, Blades, Mörk Borg, your own homebrew. MapFable doesn't care where or what you played; it just remembers it.

For Game Masters

I already write notes in a notebook / doc. Why do I need this?

A notebook only holds your side. In MapFable, the players you tag can confirm they were there and add their own memory of the session — the character they played, the moment that stuck with them. One session ends up holding every perspective, not just yours. That's the thing a notebook can't do.

I run several groups. Won't they get mixed up?

No. MapFable keeps every table apart. When you log a session, it works out which group it belongs to from who played — so your Friday Mothership crew and your Sunday D&D party each keep their own separate history. All your tables, one place, never tangled.

Logging sounds like one more chore. How long does it take?

About a minute, after the game. Pick the game, tag who played, jot a line or two about what happened — done. No setup, no prep, no template to fill. The point is to be faster than the notebook you're avoiding, not another task on your list.

Can I keep secrets my players shouldn't see?

Yes. Each session has a public recap the table sees — “Gabbo died, Elric threw a chair, you found 10 salt pouches” — and a private GM layer only you can see — “insert a Gabbo revenge arc, add a chair spirit for the haunting.” Your players never see the private notes. They don't even see that they exist, so a secret stays a secret.

Do I have to invite my players?

No — you can log a solo session or a session with players you don't tag. Tagging players is how they get to confirm and add their side, and how your table's shared history grows, but it's never required to save a session.

For Players

My GM tagged me in a session. What is this?

Your GM saved a session you were part of, and MapFable let them tag you so it's your memory too — not just theirs. You can confirm you were there, add the character you played, and leave a note about the session. It takes a few seconds, and then that session is part of your history, not only your GM's.

Do I have to do anything?

Only if you want to. Confirming takes one tap. Adding your character or a note is optional — a nice way to keep your own side of the story, but the session is saved either way. Nothing is required of you.

Do I get my own profile, or am I just a name on my GM's session?

You get your own. As you play, MapFable builds your history — the games you've played, the characters you've been, the people you've played with — into a profile that's yours. You're a player in your own right, not a tag on someone else's page.

Will my name show up publicly?

Not without your say-so. Your name stays private to your table by default. A GM can choose to make a table public, but even then your name only appears if you turn it on — and you can turn it off any time. If you'd rather stay “player,” you stay “player.”

Privacy & control

Who can see my sessions?

By default, only your table. The fact that a session happened, its recap, the notes — all of it stays with the people who were there. Your profile is private until you choose to make it public, and even then it shows you (your stats, your favorites) — never other people's names, never your table's private notes.

Can I make my profile public and findable?

Yes, if you want to — it's two separate, deliberate choices: making your profile public (shareable by link), and letting search engines show it (findable on Google). Both are off by default. You opt in to each, and you can switch either off whenever you like.

Does MapFable show other players' names on my public profile?

Never. Your public profile is about you — how much you play, what systems, your four favorites. It never lists the names of the people you played with; that's their information, not yours to publish.

Can I change my mind later?

Always. Public/private, findable/hidden, your name on a shared table — every visibility choice is reversible, any time. Nothing you turn on is permanent.

Getting started

How do I sign in?

Enter your email and we send you a secure link. Click it, and you're in — no password to remember, no password to lose. New or returning, it's the same one step.

I got a magic link but it expired. Now what?

Just request a fresh one — enter your email and we send a new link. Your account is still there; an expired link never means starting over.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. MapFable works in your phone's browser — log a session on the couch after the game, confirm one your GM tagged you in, wherever you are.

Keep the moments your table will want to remember.

Free to start. No password.
